“Autumn Sail to Quitsa”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
I was working on this early evening painting when a red sailboat passed by. What a treat to catch!…
I WORK EN PLEIN AIR, OUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE… Welcome. I am back to painting again after a sabbatical that included a few pieces done for charitable fund raisers. I am continuing to make small, 6" x 8", landscape oils, but not every day. I am also working on larger pieces. Every time I finish a painting, I will place it here on my website. If you see something you'd like to purchase, email me. Thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new pieces. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter. Sign up for my emails and I will send you an image of each new painting. I love to paint and am happy to share my painting experience with you. Most of my work is impressionistic landscape oils, inspired by the beauty of the Island of Martha's Vineyard where I live.

“Almost Sundown”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
Upon arriving, I found parking lot and dunes all in shadow. I walked up the beach path to the dune top thinking I would have to fish and not paint, as the light had gone. Seeing this view I hurried back down. Grabbing gear I raced back to catch this last sliver of reflected sunshine. The moment passed way too quickly as all turned to shadow colors. As I looked at my unfinished work and started to pack, again, I thought of catching some fish for dinner. Couples began appearing at the dune top after their sunset watch from the beach below. The first group had fishing rods and a striped bass. I did my standard fish inquiry, where, when, lure or bait and started packing up faster! The next couple stopped on top to catch their breath clutching two blue fish. After my questioning and congratulating, I found myself with my two bags and a blue fish to juggle down to the parking lot. Now I had a real dilemma, go right home, clean and cook this fresh fish, or go back to catch my own. I took the easy way out and it was delicious. I came back the next evening to finish this painting and left with only two bags to carry back down to the car…
“Summer’s Paths”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
While evening thunderheads cruised past, I enjoyed the waves of beach grass. Turning from summer’s green to autumn’s gold and smudged with spires of golden rod and poison ivy’s red, it was a lively sight to behold…
“After The Race”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
A not so sunny day, yet a good place to paint. I set up and started working hoping something would happen out in or over the pond. Some Belted Kingfishers went by, but not too close. Then a Great Blue Heron. It thought better about landing near me as I knelt to clean a brush. I had arrived too late for the sailboat race. All sailors and vessels had scattered back to their moorings before I even arrived. Then, as I refocused my gaze upon the far shore, a distant sail appeared from out of the Creek. Maybe the tide and winds were right for sailing down to the Galley, tie up, order an ice-cream and sail back in to the mooring…
“Rain On The Creek”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
I admit I got wet while painting this image. I set up between radar viewed banks of wet clouds. It had looked clear for an hour’s time, but I miscalculated the moisture in the fog. It condensed on the power lines above me and dripped, dripped, dripped on my shoulders and hat. Finally, it was so thick my canvas and paints were glistening like a cold glass of beer on a hot summer’s day. Speaking of beer, I left quickly and went home to have one…
“Black Point After Rain”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD
A heavy rain silenced all much of the day. Near evening, clouds cleared and a vibrant sunset put smiles on most faces. I ventured out and as I worked was defended by a large flock of tree and barn swallows diving and scooping up the multitude of mosquitos about at dusk…
“Saturday Race”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
These Menemsha Pond races have been in my mind all summer to paint. Weather or my schedule, or memory has kept me from them until now. And I’m sure the sailors are much better close to the end of the season than they would have been had I painted them earlier this year!…
“Lobsterville!”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.
Considering how frantic this island is in summer, especially mid August, on a weekend and with the President here, I was all alone at the beach as far as I could see. I even got my fishing rod out after this painting and tempted the gods of fish. Three other souls joined me at dusk, thrashing the waters for naught. But, what a beautiful night in Lobsterville!…
