I WORK EN PLEIN AIR, OUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE… Welcome. I am back to painting again after a sabbatical that included a few pieces done for charitable fund raisers. I am continuing to make small, 6" x 8", landscape oils, but not every day. I am also working on larger pieces. Every time I finish a painting, I will place it here on my website. The cliffs to the left have eroded so much this past year that I did not try to squeeze them all in. The bit of cliff in the background beyond the point is Lucy Vincent Beach. Two years ago you could not see that cliff from here. Global warming has increased the power of the ocean to claw back the shore line…

Meanwhile, with the cold snow cover and warm air above, the landscape view softened from the snow fog. Overhead the gray cloud cover gently misted and rained dictating painting be done from inside my van. Though it was warm enough to create without gloves, the 4 inches of slushy wet snow also made me happy to paint from the driver’s seat…

It was cold and blowing outside. I stayed in my van and painted this scene. Just before, my fisherman friend left his vessel and headed home for the day. The harbor remained quiet. As I worked a detail of US Coast Guardsmen and k-9 marched behind me out to their boat for practice maneuvers…

Ownership of this farm has just passed from an old island family to a young farmer and a land-lease to a young farming family. Until last week the barn was half hidden by a large stand of bamboo. The foreground field, idle and uncultivated the past few years, will be transformed by the sheep, and later cattle, from this beautiful meadow of Little Bluestem grass to a more traditional greener, grazing pasture. I feel lucky to have painted this now, as it will probably not have the wonderful, winter orange of Little Bluestem again…

The weather was cold and windy for this painting. When I went out the next day to finish it was off and on rainy. Had to sit and paint from my car both days, but at least I was warm…

At different times, I have sailed by, walked by, driven by, gotten close and moved afar to view this black hulled vessel. The large shape and oh so dark a black is not a color subject I would normally choose. But the mystery of ship drew me to it. I chose an evening with a falling breeze and donned my winter gear to keep me warm in the cold of the shadows as I worked. The ticking time bomb of the leaving light kept me focused and working fast. Painting from top to bottom, as I got to the details of docks and boat, the moon unexpectedly appeared. While it climbed the heavens as I moved my paints, I held my breath for fear my time was up and it would disappear before it reached it full splendor just about the eastern cloud bank…

I almost missed this painting opportunity. I love the views in the fishing village of Menemsha. Concentrating on the boats in port and their respective docks and gear, I almost didn’t see the colors of the far shore. It is full of a patch of rosa rugosa, locally known as beach rose. Usually a full, deep green color with red/pink or white roses, it opens its blooms early in spring. The scent, mixed with the aroma of the sea salty air, is a heady nose full of the summer to come. This particular stand had all turned a rusty yellow orange, stacked one atop the other marching up the hillside. On this bleak cold, almost snowy day, they were a welcome warming sight to behold…

The glacier left Chilmark a roly-poly landscape full of kettle holes, drumlins and clay and rock. The boulders, rocks and erratics have been put to use as split granite fence posts, foundations and chimney stones. The most visible of all uses are the stonewalls. Some farmers would have fun in the winter months with sticks of dynamite. They would blow up the larger boulders to make more manageable for walls and jetties. Walls like this one, high on a hill, were made with spaces between the stones to accommodate the gales and keep the walls still standing. It also did not hurt that it cost few stones to make the walls. If you were a rabbit, raccoon, otter or muskrat you would also appreciate the porosity of these boundary markers…

Finding the right days to work on this piece were frustrating. The first attempt was a fogfilled evening, but there is so much in the painting that I could not finish it before dark. The second time the sun came out. It sets this time of year just over the middle fishing shack. It was blinding and I gave up and went fishing instead. Third time was again foggy. Great, but it soon turned to rain and I had to rush for cover. After a stretch of sunny days, a heavy overcast came in and stayed, allowing me the time to finish this properly on location…

Some fishermens’ shacks are shuttered for the season. Lobstermen begin to pull traps for the fall. Striped bass and bluefish are migrating past as the waters cool from summer’s heat…
